hi. i am new here on this board and wondered if anyone can help me out w/ oil change info for a 2000 sentra. this is my gf's car and it is not a SE. i know it is 4 cyl engine and it has a spoiler on it. is there any easy way to tell which 4 cyl engine it is? in any case i went to the auto parts store and found a 4 cyl 2000 sentra in their fram book. according to the book there are 2 engines but both list the same number for the filter, which is 6607. i bought the filter, however, when i went to change it out, i looked at the white nissan oem one and it appears to be longer than the fram one. is there any source for a more oem style of filter or for a good discount on an oem one? apparently the fram no. filter is not the same size as oem. i also read the manual regarding spark plug changing intervals. the car has close to 20k now and i'm just wondering if anyone changed their plugs before the mfg recommended intervals and if so what kind are best and does it make a difference in the smoothness or running of the engine?
The engine code ought to be on the firewall or on the inside of the hood "see engine family". The oil filter is fine- use the fram with confidence, oem is same filter, different shape is all. I use NGK plugs, I would check plugs first to see what kind of shape they are in. I am a b12 guy though, if it ain't broke...
pab12, thanks for the info. i'll check out the inside of the hood for the enigne info. as far as the plugs i did pull one of them and it seems to just be slightly dirty, i didn't measure the gap or anything but just wondering if brand new ones would make a noticeable difference on a 20k mile car and where the plugs are just slightly dirty. i've heard of a guy at the auto parts store telling me he changes his every year. that seems a bit extreme but just wondered if anyone else has changes their plugs more frequently than the mfg suggests, and if so for what reason?
The plugs should be good for 100K. The dealer will want to change them at the 60k service. I have 72k on mine, still runs great. The stock OEM ones are platinums.
The best filters are the Nissan OEM ones. There are two sizes, as you noticed, The smaller one is Nissan part 15208-65F00, the larger one is 15208-9E000. The dealer has used both on my car, and up to now I have been using the smaller one when I have changed the oil.
thanks for the info johnk. well do u know if there is a reason for using the smaller vs. the larger? it would seem to me the larger filter has more capacity and go for longer before being changed but that's just a guess.. are both large and small specified equally for the car, or are there different application situations and such?
The smaller filter was speced for the SR20DET, so it should be able to handle the QG18. I liked the little ones because they were made in Japan. Both are speced for the B15 in the owners manual. The large one would probably be a bit better, as you suggest, and would let you add a little more oil also.
I have gone almost 10k on an oil and filter change with the small filter and Mobil-1. I had the oil analysed when I changed it, and it was still in excellent condition.
I may switch to the larger one. I also have a Frontier, and the larger filter is the one speced for it. That way I will only have to stock one filter size.
e2001gxe: I haven't had any brake work done yet. I need to inspect them soon. At the 30k service, the tech said they were still at 80%.
