2004 Nissan Sentra - starting problem

2004 sentra
-engine does not start the first time you turn the key, but makes a noise like it's trying to start. on the second or third attempt it finally starts. this began to occur around a year ago or so. today i tried to start it, and it gave me the noise a car gives before it starts, and it didnt start. after around the 10th time of my trying to start the engine, it started. after it started, i shut it off and turned it on again a few times, and it was fine. my friend suggested that it might be something with the engine computer, or that there is something wrong with the oxygen sensor that tells the computer how much oxygen is being mixed with the fuel. if anyone could help i'd greatly appreciate it.

The PCM is the last thing you want to suspect always. You have to do diagnostics, usually if everything is fine, then suspect the PCM. The oxygen sensor tells the PCM of the oxygen/ fuel mix in the exhaust gas. If the fuel isnt burning well enough it is "rich" and if there is more oxygen that fuel then it is "lean." Your oxygen sensor is most likely fine. go here for a glossary, while your there you can also check the "products and how to info" which the title is self explanitory, and also check the troubleshooting page for the issue your having.

I have brought the car to the mechanics a numerous amount of times, and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I'm sure if i check anything it won't help more than if the mechanic checked it. If they don't find anything wrong with the car, and they have ran a diagnostic test, what could it be that is wrong with the car? Because the car still has problems starting.

How many miles does the car have? When does the starting problem happen. In the morning after seating all night? After about two hours? My problem with my 03 GXE when it was seating for two to four hours. It turn out to be the fuel pump regulator . The car was not getting fuel pressure when I tried to start it. If it is still under warranty, think under 36k miles take it to nissan and have them check it out. If not have some one check out the fuel pressure. If it is below normal (don’t know what that is, sorry) order the parts on the web link below and have your mechanic do what it says.

http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership/.../NTB05-052.htm

parts are around 175ish

BTW if it is under warranty print it out and take it to Nissan.

Another note, this might not be the problem but it somewhere to start!

Good luck

thanks for your advice. I took the car to the mechanic already and they couldnt find anything. the problem starts usually in the morning when i try to start up my car. It is harder to start it up when the engine is cold. there is approximately 15k miles on the car.

Let me Guess... It either goes Click or URNDT when you hit the switch. with only 15k you should be warrantied..Take it to the DEALER!!! No matter where you take it... Tell them to do both a Voltage AND Amperage test on the Battery, Starter, and Solenoid wires (AKA exciter wire). If they cant tell where the prob is after that then you dont want them working on the car.
The Main starter lead (BIG wire) should have FULL battery voltage and amperage at ALL times (Doesnt matter whether the key is On or Off).
The Solenoid lead should recieve FULL battery power when you place the swithch in the START position. You'll have to consult an FSM or similar for the Amp pull for the solenoid. But you should get a good 15-20amps I would think..
Battery voltage should be 12v MINIMUM! Closer to 13v on a GOOD battery.
Amperage depends on the size battery.
If all this checks out then More than likely either the Solenoid on the starter is goin out...
If not check for..............
The Inhibitor ((Neutral saftey) switch is going out.
The starter Relay or the Ignition Switch has an issue

Hope this is of some help... But Id still check with the Dealer FIRST!
