Is it possible that the converter is bad? Is there a way to check the converter before sinking more money into the car?

I had this same problem not too long ago. Chimmike suggested it might be an exhaust gasket before the catalytic converter. Seems like it wouldn't seal correctly until the gasket expanded from the heat.
Edit: I never saw the CEL during this, so our problems may be different, but it's a cheap thing to check. I thought I would throw that out there.
