Hi all,
I am considering buying a 95 Pathfinder that seems to be in very good condition. My only hesitation is that the engine seems to be abnormally loud. It's not a clanking or banging noise that would indicate something is about to fall apart but rather it sounds just like regular engine noise, but louder. I asked the owner about it and he said that it has a secondary radiator to help with cooling and that it tends to get loud when it's hot outside (it was about 92-95 when I was driving it). Is this normal or is it something I should be concerned about? Thanks!
I can't image how the radiator effects the engine sound. There could be a high flow muffler or an exhaust leak. If you really want it, spend a few bucks to have a mechanic check it out.
Sounds like you are purchasing from someone who hasn't got a clue. I could be wrong, but first off I know oin my 92 (much the same as the 95) the factory radiator is more than adequate, even when towing. So the question is, why was a "a secondary radiator" installed in the first place (we are talking about an engine radiator and not auto trans cooler, right?).
Engine noise is usually a sign of leaky exhaulst, from the manifold back.
Radiator is definitely what he said, so that's what I'm going with.
Let's assume for the moment that it is an exhaust system leak. Is this cause for major concern? Will it cost me an arm and a leg to get it fixed? How should that affect my buying decision? I'm going to get a mechanic to look at it as well, but I would appreciate any help. Thanks again.

Costs to fix exhaust leaks vary greatly depending on what the problem is and how you go about fixing it. For example, factory catalytic converters list for around $800, but you can get an after market one for well under $100 (labor extra). Pathys are know for broken manifold studs, and an occasional cracked or warped manifold. They aren't cheap and often get replaced with headers for about the same cost (if not less).
As with any used vehicle, the cost to fix existing problems should be a consideration. How much depends on the asking price as well what the problems are. You should also consider that a 10 year old exhaust system will probably need to be fixed or replaced within several years even if it isn't a current problem.
Cool, thanks very much for the advice. Next stop.. a mechanic.
Thats a good idea... because the VG30 motor which is equiped with your 95 pathfinder sounds adnormally loud, when its overheating (aside from exhaust leaks of course), it has a louder "groan" you could say. it just sounds very TRUCK like. So yes have it inspected.
Ever looked at the temperature needle while you drove it?
