car wash or self wash

how do you wash your suv, my first time to have suv and i have a hard time cleaning the top, i can't reach it. im afraid to use car wash because some of the car wash will give you swirl and markings, there is a brushless car wash in my place i don't know the diffrence with the other car wash. what wax do you usually use. i usually use nu-finish, (teflon15%)TPS.

Self Serve Wash

As an owner of a self serve wash, I wash my 95 Pathfinder almost daily and it shines like new. The long handled brushes at most washes are perfect for cleaning the roof of your SUV. If you are afraid of scratching your car with the self serve brush, simply use the high pressure sprayer to wash the brush before using the brush on your car. Look for a local wash that uses a high quality brush with soft bristles. Most washes use nylon bristle brushes, but some (including mine) use hog hair brustle brushes to reduce the risk of scratching your car. Most self serve washes also have a spray on wax which works great for your weekly washes. I also hand wax my cars about every three months with Meguire's Cleaner Wax. The most important thing about keeping the car looking new and retaining resale value is to keep the car clean by washing, waxing, and vacuuming it regularly.

I won't take a car through a normal car wash (the type that tows the car through). The rotating brushes retain dust, which abrades a bit of paint off your car every time through. The reason for the final wax cycle is to compensate/cover up that. Your car may look shiny when it comes out, but the paint will be rubbed off after years of this. This may not be apparent until suddenly it finishes going through the clearcoat. This is the cause of cars you see where it looks like someone used a buffing wheel to sand off huge patches of paint.

You can get a long-handled broom, maybe with an angled head, or an RV brush, to clean the roof. I stand on the rear bumper or on top of the rear tires to do the top, which may not be doable if you don't have a roofrack to hold onto. If not, you could stand on a milk crate or something like that. Try to find a wax that includes UV protection.

I used to work at a car wash when I was a kid, due to the things I have seen... I will never subject any of my vehicles to that... self serv or hand wash for me!

I simply use a sponge and a 3 foot step ladder. I don't use any brushes at all, they are too abrasive for the clearcoat. Learned the hard way at a car wash. I would give it a good power rinse though, but that's all I'd do at a car wash. That is how I wash my Pathfinder.
