A few questions about my 97 Pathy

Hi there,

I'm new to the forums but I have a few questions about a couple of problems I have been having with my Pathy.

1) Recently I've had a knocking noise coming from the front driver side wheel, especially when turning or going over bumps. I know the owner before me had the right ball bearings repacked before I bought it off of him, so could this be the same problem, only now for the driver side?

2) I have been getting a higher pitched belt noise coming from the engine, but only when in idle, not when accelerating. Could this just be a fan belt or something?

Thanks for everyone who contributes - I will be taking it to the dealer in a couple weeks, but I just wanted to get everyones opinion on what they might be! Thanks again!

EDIT: I should also mention that the odo has 103,4xx miles on it, and that it's never had a tune-up thusfar.

Yea mine is not often either, I notice it when turning the wheel sometimes, sometimes when I move the car from a stop and the wheel is not straight

Had the same knocking noise from the front drivers side wheel. Turned out to be the swaybar link was bad. Replaced it with a new link and the noise was gone.

Hope that helps.

The knocking noise is most likely the front stabilizer link, the struts are probably bad as well since the were notorious for them to go bad. The links run aprox $35 each and the struts are right at $100 each not bad prices considering they are nissan factory parts.

As far as the belt noise it is either loose or old belts, or the crank pulley has separated.

with the high miles you might check into a T-belt, I just finished rebuilding one that broke a belt, very nasty situation, and very costly if it breaks. If I remember right it ran $3400 to get it rebuilt.

thanks everybody for the suggestions. for some reason I think it might be the struts too... the ride has been harsher lately and I'm guessing it's also due to this too. I've got an appointment to take it in to the dealer friday morning - thanks again!

Hey everyone,

Well just a bit of an update, haha.

My Pathy is at the dealer right now being serviced. Supposedly the knocking noise was the front brakes (????) I don't quite understand it, but they said they check the wheel bearings, struts and stabilizer links and everything looks fine. The whining belt noise was exactly that, the belts. But since new belts were recently put on, it needed a harmonic balancing, so it should quiet them down.

Along with that I'm having a full tune up and heat shield taken off the car (free of charge, thank god) since it's been rattling a bit as well.

Anyways, thanks again for all the suggestions! I'm definatley keeping this forum bookmarked - it's a great site!

FYI.......I had the same high pitched "whine" at idle but not under throttle on one of my 97 LE's Put on new belts....still had noise, thought it was bearings going bad on alternator.....not it. Turned out to be the waterpump. Replaced it and all was fine. Had 65,000 miles on it so it was kind of a surprise but anything is possible.
