2003 pathfinder needs converter

Hi all I have a 2003 Pathfinder that needs a new converter $1400 and a new windshield which I'm assuming would be about 400 and needs to pass inspection this month. Being the suv is 14 years old with 205,000 miles I'm now thinking it's time to part with it instead of paying 1800 to repair it. It also has been burning oil for a few years so I periodically have to check and add oil. I wish I had a crystal ball if I paid the 1800 to fix it and it would be around for another year may be worth it but I don't want to spend the money and in a couple of months another major repair is needed. Decisions decisions 🍷

If it is definitely burning and not leaking oil, it very well be time to get rid of it. On the VQ35DE engines, some of them end up burning oil due to ring sealing issues. Nissan later updated the rings, but it requires complete disassembly to replace piston rings, which is a lot of work/expense. The burning oil will ruin the upstream catalytic converter(s).

If you call around you can probably get a windshield installed for around 300 US, and I saw that your pathfinder has 4 converters

You could get all 4 for 650 + delivery, are they really all bad? Sounds like you need to check with a mechanic and hopefully someone who will work with you rather than trying to take you to the cleaners. Good luck and do as SMJ suggests and have the engine checked so you can make a more informed decision.

Thank you all for your replies. I took my pathfinder to another mechanic and he too confirmed it was both converters that need to be replaced also the check engine light is showing two additional things that need fixing one being the injectors. Even though he's a mechanic and would make money if I repaired the vehicle he recommended I get rid of it as soon as possible it would be too costly to repair for what it's worth and since it's burning oil I'll always have issues and repairs to do. Out shopping today for 2017 Toyota RAV4 or Honda CRV. 😀😍😎😜. Back to car payments 👎🏼😳😡😲

And why not check out the 2017 Nissan Rogue if you are going to cross shop the Rav and Crv?
Still, sad to hear your Pathfinder days are over.

Small SUV market is a tough one as there are a lot of good choices. The Subaru Forester Premium 2.5L has been at the top of Consumer Reports list for the past couple of years. They are not the prettiest vehicle on the road, but they are comfortable, reliable, have a great AWD system, good visibility and a good 26 MPG avg. I hear the Rav 4 Hybrid is overall better than the non-hybrid version, not only for just the gas mileage. The Honda CRV and the Rogue are good vehicles, too. Then there's the Kia Sportage, the Mazda CX5, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport...

Thank you all! I looked at the RAV4 and CRV both good both have plus and minus. Also looked at Honda HRV...smaller SUV but liked it. Then I saw the Honda Fit 😮 And thought what a tiny car reminds me of the flinstones car....well sat inside and actually liked it as small as it is it was comfy like the price too 🤑 I am getting a Honda or Toyota only. Had a CRV that went over 300,000 miles with hardly any repairs done to it through the years. Have 2 CRVs currently in the home driven by family members both 2011 both just over 100,000 miles no repairs yet just the normal maintenance...oil change, tires, battery.

I will miss my pathfinder. Has anyone ever donated their car/SUV?? I am thinking of donating the pathfinder.

Thanks🚗🚗🚗🚗🚗

Only a Honda or a Toyota? Well I guess it depends on the model but your Pathfinder lasted 6 years longer than our 2001 Cr V which went to the junkyard with numerous issues including 2nd major transmission failure. Still the Fit is a good car, space inside is surprising and gets great gas mileage. I hope it serves you well. Donating the pathfinder sounds like a great idea.
