Is Changing Transmission Filter Worth It?

Hi Folks

Just curious.
I just put in a new transmission fluid filter in my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder SE.
I was going to just change the fluid, but I figured with 186,000 miles under its belt it must be time to change the trans filter.
From what I could see of the original metal filter screen- the original filter still looked good!
Beyond my peace of mind - do you think the car will reap any benefit from the filter change out, or should I have just done a fluid change?

Just wondering.
Thanks much in advance
Phil

Thanks! That's the route Ill take in the future.

After some thought, I realized that Im glad I pulled the pan so I could see the material at the bottom. The stuff at the bottom didn't look too bad ... maybe my transmission is in pretty good shape - so thats good info to know!

Most trannies in Asian-based manufacturer's vehicles don't have filters that are meant to be serviced. Their thinking is that if there is enough debris in the fluid to clog the screen/filter, then it is a sign that clutches are breaking apart and a rebuild is necessary, not a service. Fluid replacement is the only required maintenance.
