Oil leak 2001

Dealer is telling me the oil leak I'm seeing is from the valve(?) cover gaskets. I recently had new plugs and coils put in would there be a connection? Are there covers that would have been removed and if not sealed properly leak oil? I don't have a shop manual to check.

Would appreciate any info ASAP as I want to approach the dealer soon.

Plugs and coils being replaced would not cause a valve cover gasket to leak,

Are you sure its motor oil?

I have a 01' and I am having a slow leak in my power steering fluid. Nothing to affect performance.

Pretty sure this is motor oil. I cleaned (Gunked) the engine and trans. and added a dye to the crankcase oil for an appointment on Tues to check for a leak. I'm going to an indepentant repair shop for this second opinon. Hoping that maybe the valve cover leak is running down onto the bellhousing to make it look like a rear seal issue.

a leak from the valve cover can find its way to the bell housing...

Well, my luck ran out. The leak was very obivious from the bell housing (weep hole on bottom). Trans and engine were very clean and only oil was right there. No sign of valvle covers leaking. They quoted me about 8 hrs labor or $820. Does that sound like a fair price? Dealer quoted $1,300.

That's pretty fair considering the transmission has to be pulled. Lots of work to do that seal. Where in SW FL are you taking it? Be glad that's all you have, my valve cover gaskets are leaking and my rear main seal is, too...170k miles.

I'm in Fort Myers area. Dealer said valve covers were leaking too but after cleaning engine and surrounding areas last mechanic couldn't find any sign even with dye in the oil. For now I'll live with the leak until (I hope) early next year then get it fixed.

Have tried there and a site called Driverside. Could not find any reference to rear seals.

Sorry that you live in Fort Misery. I grew up there and still own a house in Cape Coral.

Valve Cover gaskets are easy to replace. If you can change plugs, you can change those gaskets. Rear main is a cheap part, horrible to replace because the tranny has to come out. Oil pan gets dropped and then seal is replaced (actually, it's a unit).

Nissan told me the same thing 2 years ago when i took my car in for a major service. They said its a "minor leak' and would need to be fixed soon. I told them not to fix anything had my buddy (a mechanic) take a look at. Guess what he said. These is no leak of any kind. Went back to that dealer on several occasions for other services and they havent brought up "the minor leak" ever again.

Have to remember Service departments have to meet sales goals as well.
