Half Shafts

My son has an 89 Pathfinder in which the half shafts are toast. He is broke, and Im wondering, could he just remove the shafts, and drive it as a 2 wheel drive for awhile? Or do they keep things together inside the hub. I was gonna take em out, and make a plate to cover the hole to keep dirt out.

Did the boots just rip or are they making nasty noise in 4WD? If it's just the boots, I'd buy some new boots ($12-15 each IIRC), pull the CV's, replace the boots and put them back on. I've rebuilt mine twice now, it's a very simple process aside from the removal of the CV's.

FYI: the CV's don't spin in 2WD anyway unless you have broken/stuck auto hubs...

With the right tools they are pretty easy to replace (an air ratchet really speeds up the process). I did mine in about an hour. I got a shaft from a u-pull-it junk yard for $10 and just repacked the CV joints and put new boots on it for the above mentioned $15.
