brake light on...

When its cold out (-40f) and i start my pathy the brake light comes on...it usually stays on until the truck is warmed up. The fluid level is fine when its cold, and there is no problem with braking while cold. Any ideas on why the light would be on? btw mine is a 97 SE

The plunger switch on the pedal must be off a little... The lever may be just enough away from the switch to cause it to stay on until the brake lever heats up...i suppose

I believe he means the brake light on the dashboard, not the tail lights.

With ten years of use on the brake fluid, I'd recommend bleeding/flushing the brake system. One way to accomplish this is in the following -

· Remove brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir and replace with new fluid
· Starting from the tire furthest from the master cylinder, loosen and tighten the bleeder screw on the brake piston/caliper
· Have a helper pump the brakes 5 times and hold pedal pressure
· Open the bleeder screw so that brake fluid flows out until flow stops and close the bleeder screw
· Have the helper pumps the brakes again and repeat above process 5-10 times. Observe that there are no air bubbles escaping.
· Repeat for the rest of the brake pistons/calipers.

Yes that is what I was talking about...that sounds like a plan, I will just have to wait til summer to do it...any clue why that light would come on?

Air in the line or maybe some water in the brake fluid. The water freezes and messes with the pressure switch. As long as there is good pedal pressure and brakes act properly, the light is an inconvenience.
