its the tube that you put the gas pump hose into. it goes into the tank, there is no charge for it to be done.

probably would have only taken 1.5 if they'd had the part ready to go, instead of waiting until I got there to decide to run to the "warehouse" and pull it off the shelf. Appointments don't mean so much, apparently.

Recall 07V435000: Fuel Filler Tube Replacement
Notes

MAKE/MODELS: MODEL/BUILD YEARS:

Infinity/QX4 1997-2001

Nissan/Pathfinder 1997-2001

MANUFACTURER: Nissan North America, Inc.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V435000 MFR'S REPORT DATE: September 12, 2007
Component: Fuel System, Gasoline: Storage: Tank Assembly: Filler Pipe and Cap

POTENTIAL NUMBER OF UNITS AFFECTED: 372250

SUMMARY:
On certain vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia , Wisconsin and The District of Columbia, during the coating process of the fuel filler tube assembly, an insufficient amount of coating may have been applied at the lower mounting bracket. This could result in an opening in the coating which can allow water to enter and make contact with the bare metal of the tube.

CONSEQUENCE:
This may result in surface rust but not perforation of the tube. However, in those areas of the country which use heavy concentrations of road salt in the winter, if a mixture of snow/water and salt makes contact with the bare metal, corrosion may occur to a degree which results in perforation of the tube. In this case fuel leakage may occur when filling the tank. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.

REMEDY:
Dealers will replace the fuel filler tube assembly with a new one with an improved coating process. The recall is expected to begin on or about November 26, 2007. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

NOTES:
Customers may also contact The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Anytime a recall comes out, the service manager receives a package of TSB's to distribute to the technicians and service writers explaining the details, usually a couple of weeks prior to the start of the campaign. If parts are needed, the parts dept. was usually receive a number of parts based upon the vehicle's sold (this doesn't mean that they get a recall kit for every vehicle they sold that's involved in the recall, only that the number of kits they get will differ from other dealers based on the number of vehicle's sold). While I can see a dealer not initially knowing about a service bulletin that is released relating to something that is not for a recall, I have a very hard time believing that they don't know about a recall that has already started.
