I searched the forum but couldn't find an answer to this question. Probably using the wrong terms. Anyways, I have one tire I need to replace. The other 3 are about 1/2 way through their life. Can I replace just one tire? Or, 2 tires? Or do I need to replace all 4? I do use the 4wd frequently at lower speeds. Thanks!
I would at least go with 2 if you replace any. Mine has 3 that are maybe 10k away from the end of life and a uniroyal liberator thats pretty new, and my pathy pulls to the side with the liberator and turning doesnt feel normal, even after all 4 being balanced and 4 wheel alignment.
The issue is that if you have wheels/tires of unequal diameter on a driving axle, it can cause abnormal wear on the differential over time. I wouldn't put an old tire and a new tire on the same axle, however if dvdswanson says it okay, you're probably good to go.
You should consider laxman's point as well. I've had similar experiences. You didn't indicate why you are replacing the tire, but if it is for some defect realted problem, then you can expect issues from the other tires eventually.
The general theory is that on 4WD or AWD vehicles, you should keep the outer circumferance of the tires relatively the same or close (remember, every 1" differance in the outside diameter of the tires equates to 3.14" of differance in the outer circumferance of the tires). So, if you have a significant differance in the outer diameter of the new vs. old tires, you should replace all four. Not only can there be an affect of the differentials, but the transfer case and the 4-wheel ABS system. Personally, I would at least recommend replacing the pair.
