dealership service center woes

Hey everyone!

Love the forum btw. It's nice to know there are knowledgable people out there willing to help.

I'm in a bit of a pickle and I need some advice. I recently brought my 01 pathfinder to into the Nissan dealership to have my VTC sensor changed out, passenger side. I attempted to take out the old sensor myself but ended up cracking the bolt. I knew the sensor needed to be changed because I was getting a p1140 code on my OBD II reader. They did everything and I was happy. They even did some warranty work on a fuel filler tube. The other day I went to pick up my pathfinder but it didnt start. It turned over but quickly idled down and died. The SES light even started flashing. I know I didn't bring it into the dealerhsip under these conditions.

Here is where the story gets worse... They dealerhsip recommended that I replace the ignition coils and change from my champion spark plugs to a brand that comes default with the pathfinder. I was hesitant at first because I thought to myself how could this happen out of nowhere? So the dealership does the work and I get a bill for just over $1000. When I go to pick up the vehicle for the second time it does the exact same thing, it wont start, the engine is losing power. We manage to give it some gas and with difficulty get it home.

Here's the kicker... they are claiming that the bad ignition coils was masking the real problem, something with the air intake. They havent done any additional assessments yet but it was hinted that this problem is going to cost much more $$$. It's killing me because when I brought the vehicle in it generally ran fine with the exception of the SES light being on. Because the dealership diagnosed the problem as the ignition coils but the problem remains am I entitled to my money back? or at least for them to actually fix the problem no matter what it is without any additional cost to myself? I resent having to pay $1000 on parts that never needed to be replaced in the first place. In summary I had a working vehicle with an SES light, now I am down $1000 and have a non functional vehicle. What do I do?

wow, "masking the real problem" is a choice statement for a dealer to make especially since anyone who spends 5 minutes on this site can see that some 01's have more than their share of SES issues. Since you authorized the work, it may be hard to get your money back but maybe you can argue that you should only have to pay for the parts and not the labor since they misdiagnosed the problem. I've used that approach with unscrupulous businesspeople before and have had some success with it though I've never had to use it with my Nissan dealer.

go talk to the GM of the dealership, plead your case, explain how you have spent an extra grand plus the cost of the vehicle at the dealership. squeaky wheel gets the grease. contact Nissan Customer Service and BBB if you have to.
