Unhappy need advice on tough situation...

I recently brought my vehicle to a nissan dealership because my "check engine soon" light had come on. I have a OBD II reader that told me the code wasd p1140, a VTC sensor on bank 1. I live in a very cold climate and to make a long story short I broke the bolt. I took my 01 pathfiner into the dealerhsip to drill out the bolt and replace the sensor. They called me the next day saying that the work had been done and that I could come pick up the vehicle. They even said they did some warranty work on some recall, something about a fuel line replacement. I was very satisified with the price of the repair.

Now previous to any work done on my truck there was a bit of a rough idle when I was stopped, only a mild inconvenience. When I went to start my vehicle in the parking lot of the dealership it started with an extremely low idle and died almost immediately. I tried again with the same results. I marched back into the dealerhsip and they were fairly defensive with me saying that they only did what I had told them.... They said they would look into it. I got a call back saying that they had diagnosed the problem to the ignition coils and that they all had to be replaced. They came to this conclusion from a SES code that did not exist prior to me taking it in... Does this sound legit? I mean I drove the truck there and now in their care the vehicle wont start. How could this happen? The odds of this malfunciton happening while sitting in their parking lot? Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really worried that the error is related to something they screwed up with the repair and instead of admitting to it they want to place the blame on a non existant problem and in the process take me for alot of money. They still have my vehicle and I really need some advice...

This much I can tell you: ignition coils are problematic on many VQ series V6's. It is almost impossible for them all to fail at once. The problem however, is that if it sets a P1320 primary ignition circuit malfunction and not with a code identifying the specific cylinder (ie a P0301 Cyl. #1 misfire), Nissan recommends replacing the full set of coils as it is tough to identify the single coil unless it is misfiring at all times.

Could an ignition coil gone bad during its stay at the dealer on its own? Certainly, it could. Is that the problem or was the problem caused by something they did?...That question I can't answer because I wasn't there during the repair no have I actually worked on the vehicle.

if you have a good service manager maybe you can talk him into splitting the cost with you. my advice is be nice and level headed that goes a long way. if they dont give you the answers you want you have the right to call the local nissan dpsm and speak with him. 1-800-nissan-1 and they can hhok you up with his #. but try everything you can at the service department before you call the dpsm. good luck. hey also things do just fail. when fuses pop you dont know when they will coils are just the same.
