I have a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. A little while ago the odometer starting switching to little zero's (the lower half of the digi readout) and beeping. It does this intermittently and is really annoying. When it happens it does it over and over again.
I've talked to other people that have had battery issues come to light after a year or two of ownership. They've all had the same issue as me. Spazzing IP.
The dealer identified the problem as a faulty cell in the battery. Even though the battery is a wear item, the majority of this service is covered under warranty.
Being that you own an 05 Pathfinder, you'll notice a very handy battery gauge that will tell you if you have enough juice. Granted all my dials were dancing about so I had no idea. Other people have been able to read their gauges.
Of course Nissan is not about to issue a recall notice for this. They'll put a better battery in their 08's and pretend everything is fine.
Another common denominator in this scenario is the introduction of cold weather. After a week of below freezing tempuratures my battery took it's nose dive. I've never had to replace a battery after 16 months of ownership.
Needless to say this will likely be my last Pathfinder. It's a great truck and all but 20mpg isn't all that great when you need to fill it with premium. I could also do without the rattles. I've fixed the driver arm rest noise and the headliner sounds but there are still a few other mystery sounds I can't find. What were we talking about? Oh yeah, batteries.
I've had more problems with this vehicle in 3 yrs. than i had with the last 3 vehicles over the last 12 years.
Yes, I just put a battery in my 05 pathfinder. The last 2 new vehicles I bought lasted almost 6 yrs. The damn thing left me stranded in the Michael's parking lot last week! I dropped the wife off, stayed in the car with the map light on reading something for 10 minutes, she gets in, i turn the key, the car is dead! Battery started to corrode the first week I bought it. It never looked right since the truck was new. Nissan of course claimed it was normal!
Rule 1 is never buy a vehicle within the first year or two of a model change...It usually takes a little time to get all the "bugs" worked out.
You do not "have to" use premium fuel in the 05 Pathfinder. Nissan states:
Fuel Requirements
Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (research octane number 91).
For improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (research octane number 96)gasoline is recommended.
CAUTION: Do not use leaded gasoline. Using leaded gasoline will damage the three way catalyst. Using a fuel other than that specified could adversely affect the emission control devices and systems, and could also affect the warranty coverage validity.
This is surely a short circuit somewhere. Try to disconnect the headlights, foglights and tail lights connectors and take a look, might be dirty or corroded, give them a WD40 clean up and reconnect them. Might also be a loose ground connection, might as well check it.
I have a 2006 Pathfinder that has started exhibiting the exact same condition as originally described by CaptainJ. I'll take a look at all the light connectors as suggested. I called two dealers who both said they've not heard of this condition before. One suggested I wait for the Service Engine light to stay on so they can see the code. Other than that, they can't help. Any pointers to other dealers or owners who have a better idea would be greatly appreciated.
The small "o"s in the odometer window are a visual indication of the brightness of the gauge backlight. The beeping, I believe, is when it is turned up all the way. If you spin the trip reset knob it dims and brightens the lights behind the speedo and other gauges, while the "o"s reduce and increase from left to right. If the "o"s are coming on and the beeping is happneing without you touching anything, it very well could be a faulty gauge-brightness knob (aka, trip reset button).
Hope that helps.
Also, don't let the moderators catch you starting up an old thread. Forum guru's hate that stuff.
