I have a 96 pathfinder LE automatic - and recently started to drop off gear after the 3rd - so around 40km/h and wont shift to higher gears. I took it to a garage, they flushed the transmission and they were saying some sort of valve wont open to let the transmission fluid to be able to change gear - to fix this they were asking an awful lot of money ($2500) and I wonder if is any other way to fix this and also I found a used transmission from a 94 Pathfinder - would it work with mine or from 96 was a totally different transmission?

As far as the 94 trans.....No....The WD21 and R50 trannies were differant. Assuming your 96 is a 4X4, you would need a trans from a 10/95-12/98 Pathfinder (Nissan reman. P/N: 310CM-44X75RE ).Whether you need a trans, a new valve body or a solenoid pack could only be determined through the proper diagnosing of the problem, including line pressure and stall testing, checking for codes and monitoring the datastream with a scan tool and following any appropriate service manual procedure for your specific problem. Also, removing the pan and finding heavy metal debris or clutch material would also be an indication that it's time for a new trans.
