well, definitely need a tire rack. I don't know how the rack mounts are installed inside the body, but you can buy a customized bumper with a swing out tire mount. I've seen a lot of them on Jeep CJ's, YJ's and TJ's.
Mounting it on the rear gate won't work, as I'm sure you know.
could always retrofit from another vehicle that has it... just change demensions w/ torch and sheetmetal. have fun trying to align and thread brace bolts.

damn government and their incredibly expensive tickets, hows a good natured racer supposed to stay legit?
gd... if i could only make it past the lower class, i'd be rich. damn facists.
96 thru 99.5, if the PF didn't come with a spare carrier on the back, you can't retrofit one as there are parts under the sheetmetal it attached to. You'd need to get an aftermarket bumper/carrier combo to repalce the stock bumper.
00-04... Apparently there is a super-rare early (00 or 01) that had a stock rear carrier. I've seen the pic! But otherwise, under the trunk it stays.
You could relocate the spare to a rack on the roof if you really want to get it out from under.

Or it could be an older one with updated tails and rear bumper like I'm doing...
sorry i didnt reply earlier with more info. but i have a 1990 pathfinder and wanted to do the rear swinging spare like on others around that same generation. so basically from what you guys are saying is just find the parts from another and drill the holes and we're good to go?
was thinkin bout puttin it on top too..
but yeah, i wasn't talking about the same vehicle... hence the cutting/welding sheetmetal....if it doesn't work, you just pull from another vehicle and MAKE it fit.

There's gotta be some extra steel under the body on the 91-95 models above and below the tail light. I'm sure sheep metal can't hold 50+ lbs. of weight, not to mention all the bumps.
So I'm thinking if you really want that exact look, you may need to head over to a body shop, IF they're willing to do it. The other way, like I said before, get a custom made bumper with a swing out tire carrier.
One guy in town that I met use to make them for Jeep C,Y and TJ's and was asking about $800 each one. They were quite nice actually, used polyeurethane bushings for the swing. They bushings are a great material as they're also used for leaf spring suspensions.
thanks inanima...i was actually looking at 4x4parts for doing their 3 inch suspension lift with the bilstien shocks...but i came across that rack. i do have yakima racks on top for my snowboards. but even still i was just wondering because there is a guy on craigslist.org in my area selling a tire gate for 150.
