I have a 1998 pathfinder that is making a whistling noise in the radiator fan area . It does it only when engine is idling, stops when I press on gas (accererate). Please, any suggestions? Someone suggested spraying wd 40 on fan pulley and belts .That didn't help.
I have a 2002 Pathfinder and it does the same thing, worse when starting first thing in the mornig. Did the WD40 still doing it, had the belts replaced and still the same. Being told it maybe the Alternator or Pully that has the belts on it.
Did you get your issue resloved?
I have the same issue, on my Pathfinder SE 2001 model (purchased in 2000). It has absolutely identical manifestations: whistling noise in the front of the radiator (could be closer to the other pulley on the lower right side which I do not know what it is)
I just replaced both belts at NISSAN, and it still making the noise!!
I would like to try the WD40 spraing, however is it advisable to spray the belts ? Does not cause any damage?
It is amazing that other people are experiencing the identical issues with their Pathfinders...
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

I had the belts replaced by a local repair show, the noise contiuned so I took it a Nissan dealer. The Nissan dealer couldn't find anything wrong with the exception of the belts I had repalced. Told me they were a cheap set, so I had them install Nissan brand and the problem went away.
So if you have the Nissan brand installed and it still does it then it maybe the pulley, as that is what the dealer said would be next if the belts didn't work.

Good Luck on your journey
Thanks for your response szeszko. The job was done at NISSAN, so I imagine they used genuine parts. Should I aske them to tighten the belts?
Thank you to everyone who replied. Here is the update: I brought back the car to Nissan and they said that they are almost positive that the idler pulley assembly (the belt tensioner) is causing the noise. So I gave them the Ok to replace it. Unfortunately after replacing it with a new one, the noise is still there, but not as loud as before. It is intermittent, around 1700 RPM, and fades out when the engine is hot, which makes it difficult to demonstrate it to the Nissan technician.
What else could be? How should I know if this is caused by the AC clutch? I’ve turned on the AC this morning, and while driving with it, the noise seems to be there.
I’ve tried to better locate the source of this whistling noise and I am wandering if the alternator pulley is causing it…
I am so disappointed that after spending $400 on this, the only thing that NISSAN cares is to charge me more money for replacing other parts ….
Any suggestions? What should I do?

NISSAN seems to acknowledge that the fun clutch is the problem. Part #21082. They want $340, plus labor to change it, but there is no guarantee...The part is estimated at $112. I think I am going to pass this "opportunity" and let it whistle…
