Automatic Transmission revving high

Hi,
I'm having a problem with my 1999 Pathfinder.
From a cold start, I let it run for a few minutes, but it is still revving high between first and second gear. Normally, it should rev up to about 2500 rpm before kicking into 2nd gear, but it's been revving up to like 4500 rpms.
I brought it to a Nissan dealership for the diagnostic, and they told me that it was a valve body inside the transmision and that the best thing would be to change the transmission completely. I'm worried they just want to make $3000 from me.
Has any experienced this?
I would appreciate anyones feedback before I go and make a very expensice decision.

How's it breathing?

I've seen throttle problems before. I would suggest letting them do some diagnostics work on the airflow sensors before letting them tear apart your transmission. It might just be that your truck thinks it needs to rev higher.

I would also recommend keeping it out of a dealership garage. Yeah they have diagnostics equipment but so do most reputable auto shops. Find one you can trust. It will set you back about $50 for them to hook it up and ask it what's wrong.

It's ultimately up to you but like medical work you should always get a second opinion. I only go to the dealership if it can be fixed under warranty.
