You need a code reader or scan tool to erase the codes...this assuming you repaired the problem(s) that caused the MIL to set.
it was one of the 02 sensers that triggered it a month ago, now its coming back on again. its got to be that. i had a shop reset it before but now i wont to do it myself. do you know how to do it?
update: engine light turned off by itself today. who knows why it went on to begin with. I love my truck but hate this engine light bs. i think its nissan's way of making $$$.
Unplugging the battery terminals will erase the codes, leave them off for 30 minutes and that should do it. But as you've now seen, if the error is no longer detected the check engine light will go off by itself. Really no reason to reset it since it will reset itself after the right drive cycles are met.

Did you change the O2 sensor that triggered the light?
Even if you reset the ECU, the light will light up again after 3 drive cycles if there is still a fault that's not fixed.

no i didnt change it. it went off by itself only to come back on again after i put gas in it. seems kind of weird to me.
I'm afraid the MIL light will keep on lighting up untill you fix the fault and reset the ECU.
The same thing happened to me, the light kept on lighting up till I fixed the fault and made sure no error codes were showing on the code reader, then I reset the ECU and it was OK ever since.
Good luck.
For OBD II PF, disconnecting the negative terminal for 30 mins wont reset the computer.. I left that off for a week, still didnt reset.. Need so many driving cycles to reset computer. Or use a OBDII code reader with reset.
My 01's O2 sensor lights didnt go away until I replaced rear sensors, and get an ECU software update (not a simple reset) from Nissan !!
Worked for my 97 OBDII in the past. But if you replace the O2 sensor and correct the problem you really don't need a reset, the error code will go away on its own after enough drive cycles.

ok light went off like 10 minutes ago. dont know why this goes on and off but i think the tank of gas is the culprit this time. after i put gas in it the light went on til today.
Many auto parts stores will retrieve the code for you for free. I would have them pull the code for you; it is possible that there is something else other than an O2 sensor that is causing the problem now. It is also possible for something to cause an O2 sensor code to set and the O2 sensor is not the fault. An exhaust leak, a poor terminal connection in the circuit, an excessive rich or lean condition can all cause O2 sensor codes to trigger, for example.
If you say it went off after you put gas in it, then I suspect the gas cap: Check if it firmly tight and make sure it's not leaking pressure, this is known to trigger the MIL light.
