Resetting ECU

I'm a little confused. After reading many posts here about resetting the ECU and having to get into contortionist positions to do so, is erasing an error code with a scan tool the same as turning the screw on the ECU?

Yes, with a scan tool you can clear present and stored codes in the ECU.

Thanks for the info. It didn't seem like the fun thing to do on a sunny afternoon. I tried to get my large hands on top of the ECU to find the reset screw and all I got was scratches and a cramped hand! Erasing the codes seemed a lot easier.

What year? You can clear ECU codes on 87-95's by disconnecting the battery for a little while...

Reseting ECU

That's a '97 Pathfinder XE. I read about the battery cable thing and removing fuse #17 under the dash. I leave it off for a few hours and it seems to work, sometimes. It's just a a pain to do as is trying to get at the reset screw on the ECU. I was just curious if erasing the codes with a scantool would have the same affect as a reset.

Thanks for the reply!

Same result. Using the ECU diagnostic mode selector screw flashes MIL codes that need to be converted to P-codes that the scan tool reads, but erasing codes is the same.
