Looking for External Gas Can Mount

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows about any gas can mounts available for Nissan Pathfinders...specifically a 1990 Pathfinder SE, with the swingout tire rack.

I'd love to mount a gas tank to the spare tire, or preferably beside the spare tire. I've noticed that to the right side of the spare tire, there are 2 holes which look like they are designed to have something bolted there (see link below). I was wondering if there are any gas can holders that anyone knows of that could bolt in there? It couldn't be a very wide gas can due to the large spare tire, but I would really like to have a place to carry extra gas since my fuel gauge doesn't work very well. Otherwise are there any gas can holders that mount on the spare tire like how bike racks connect at the centre of the spare tire? I'd prefer not to have to drill any holes...just have something I can bolt on directly without modification.

Thanks

I mounted one on a friend's 89 tire carrier a couple of years ago:

Remove can from can carrier base
Position base against tire carrier
Drill holes
Bolt the base to the carrier using nylock nuts to prevent anything from loosening up
Reinstall can

It was pretty tough.

Keep in mind that the can does tend to cover up the taillight when it's mounted on the passenger's side.

Where do you get the can carrier base? I had a good look, and realized that it would be tough to install a gas can the way I described earlier without blocking the tail light.

What about the Jerry can holders that mount onto the spare tire? Does anyone have any experience with those?

Gas Can Base

Check Ebay and search for Military Gas Cans, Jerry Cans and/or Gas Cans. You cna also look for Nato Cans. I got mine on Ebay and it was basically new old stock military. Both the older slide top cans and the screw top cans use the same base.
