1991 Pathfinder won't start when warm

1991 Pathfinder won't start sometimes when warm or may run rough when it does start when warm. Smells like flooding. Problem seemed to first appear when gas tank was allowed to go almost empty, so first mechanic thought fuel problem and tried fuel system cleaner. Problem seemed to gradually disappear, then reappeared several months later. Second mechanic said his test showed weak spark and tried new distributor. Ran ok for several days, then acted up again. Now second mechanic says may need a new computer (he says intermittently firing in wrong order which doesn't sound possible, but I may have misunderstood) and suggests dealer service. Someone on forum mentioned transistor going to ignition coil and I'd like to try cooling that area when it acts up if it's accessible. Any help appreciated.

Do you have any ECU error codes showing? The procedure to check the codes is pinned at the top of the truck/SUV forum.

I will print out the procedure and check that. It seems like the 2nd mechanic should have done that but he didn't mention it.
