Speedometer gear removal

I just converted my 88 over to a 5 speed manual. All went well however, the speedometer won't work.

It is properly seated into the dash cluster (checked twice).

I only drove the donor truck onto a dolly and into my driveway (had thrown a rod through the oil pan) and I don't recall taking notice if the speedo worked or not.

I was going to pull the gear from the A.T. that just came out because I know that it worked BUT it is seated in there pretty tight and I don't want to break it.

Is there any tricks to pulling it out?? anything easy?

The tranny on the floor is one thing (very accessible) but I don't want to fight with the one in the truck.

I think this is still cable operated, correct?

If so, try disconnecting the cable from the speedo pinion on the trans (or transfer case, as applies) and using a power drill to spin the cable and see if the head unit works. If it doesn't, reconnect the pinion to the cable and pull the cluster. Support the rear wheels of the ground and run the vehicle in drive while observing the cable to see if it turns. If it does, you most likely have a bad head unit. If the cable action is erratic or not at all, you may have a bad cable.

the cable isn't spinning behind the dash cluster. I do know the cluster works and the cable is good because I was using it before the tranny swap.

the pinion gear in the tail is my guess but taking the mounting bolt out is as successful as I have been. Unlike an ie: chevy, it doesn't seem to want to just slip out and I would hate to pry or pound to much for fear of scarring it - or worse, cracking it.

I usually soak them down with rust penetrant and then turn them back and forth to break them loose before attempting to pull out. If it's real bad, you may have to put a little heat on the area around it.

Those things are notoriously difficult to extract. Most people end up just beating the crap out of the old one to get it out and replacing it.
