97 SE Automatic dropping out of overdrive

hey, everybody. i've been this problem intermittently for about a year. my 97 SE jumps in and out of overdrive at highway speeds (and searches for a gear around 40-55 as well). it started last fall, then disappeared during the winter. started up again this spring. might have something to do with temperature...not sure.

i had my trusty local shop check it out, and the diagnostics showed no error codes. they suggested bringing it to a trans shop, and said it may also be a bad TPS. that seems to jive with this post. http://www.NissanForums.com/truck-su...-problems.html

i replaced all transmission, transfer and diff fluids, but the problem still persists. i adjusted the TPS, no change. replaced and adjusted the TPS, still no change.

My next course of action is to replace the Fluid Temp Sensor in the trans, like RealtimeS4 did. Seems to make sense, and may explain the problem coming and going with the seasons.

Does anyone know where this sensor is? Is it easily replaced, or do you have to drop the trans?

Any other suggestions? Thanks,
Cash

Looks like it's right there when you drop the transmission pan:

Just drain the pan good first. You might pick up replacement bolts, they're considered one time use bolts and call for very low torque.

i took it to a trans shop, and they diagnosed the trans fluid temp sensor was to blame replaced it and it now shifts perfectly. $90 part, $90 labor, flush, fill and filter. Totaled about $225. id encourage anyone having this issue to replace the sensor
