98 Pathfinder Thermostat Question

I need to replace the thermostat on my 98 Pathfinder 4x4. Does the timing belt need to come off in order to replace the thermostat? I have no problem with basic car repair (I can follow directions) but anything too involved and I would feel more comfortable taking the car to a mechanic. Is this something that can be done on a Saturday with a Chilton book?

Thanks,
Scott

No, the thermostat doesn't require timing belt or cover removal. The housing is located in the center of the "triangle" formed by the covers. I would highly recommend using a genuine Nissan thermostat, however. Part #21200-V7206 runs about $12. RTV sealant is used for the "gasket."

Thanks for the fast response. I'll contact my dealer to see If I can get my hands on the part. Is there any special tools needed to remove and replace?

Thanks,
Scott

Just typical metric hand tools. Housing bolts should be 12MM. If you want a copy of the procedure send me an e-mail at smj999smj@hotmail.com and put "RE: 98 Path T-stat" in the subject line and I'll get it out to you, ASAP.
