I purchased this vehicle a few months ago with 49k miles on it. While the rear diff will never drip fluid on the ground, the housing itself remains damp. Closer inspection reveals that fluid seems to be coming from the vent on the top of the diff housing.

The interesting thing is that, before we bought this Pathfinder, we looked at an 03 model with the same thing happening. When I saw that one, I figured someone just overfilled the diff. Seeing this one doing the same makes me wonder though. Although they did both come from the same dealer. Someone overzelous on filling the diff maybe?

Again, it's not enough to drip on the ground, but it is enough that, after a drive, you smell gear lube as you walk past the rear of the vehicle.

Anyone ever experience this?

When I bought my '02... I noticed the same thing. It was about a year after i purchased it when I was about to tow all my belongings into another state... it might have been there the whole time.

I took it to my mechanic, he topped off the fluid, replaced the plug and sealed it. I believe it just need a fresh seal on it. Haven't seen a wet spot since.
