NOOB just got 89 Pathfinder

Man I love this truck, my brother owned it for a while and it sat for almost 4 years but I raised it from the dead. I need to do some bodywork but other than that it's in good driveable shape. I remember back in the day we'd all go wheeling and it did stuff lifted Toys and Chevs couldn't(or had to take multiple runs at it So why are these so capable?? Suspension? Diff?

I'm looking for some good info on these. I also am wondering why the gas gauge and coolant gauge aren't working although it worked for a minute the other day.

I want this as a good moderate wheeling truck and was wondering about what shocks are recommended, lift, ect..

Sorry about all the Noob questions, I'm just excited to get working on it and start wheeeeeling!!

The fuel and temp gauges are connected to a 8V voltage regulator behind and on top of the gauge cluster(3 wires, little aluminum boxy looking thing). You can buy a new one from a dealership for around $17 or find an 8VDC voltage regulator at Radio Shack and solder some wiring onto it for about $3.
