2002 Pathfinder SE front struts

I am being told by the dealer that my front struts are gone at 45k miles? Is this normal? The ride has gotten very rough, and when travelling at 40+mph over rough pavement it becomes, shall we say, a bit more challenging to steer. I have never heard of something like this going at 45k miles before, seems way too low. I drive average, maybe a bit fast but certainly not overly aggressive. The roads in my area do suck(boston area).

I am a bit skeptical of the dealer. My car has the Climate control and at 40k miles it had the full speed blower thing happen which I read about yesterday after finding this place. They had me replace the whole head unit at a cost of $650+, i read that 2 little things needed to be replaced only. Did they screw me here or am I just clueless as to the terminology?

Also, assuming the struts are gone, what should I expect to pay for that to be fixed? Dealer telling me $950 plus if the the stabilizer bars have to be replaced also. If I goto a private garage, how do I know I am getting quality parts put in? Are there name brands I should request or????

Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully respond!! Take care

a lot of others have gone with kyb for the struts. you could do it yourself for about $200 (price for parts), from what i've read it doesn't sound too tricky of a procedure.

If you have a good strut compressor it's fairly straight forward, just time consuming. Don't forget to re-torque to MFG. specs.

Last time I did it, I both the struts & shocks seperately and the dealer charged $400 for front and rear installation. An independent shop should be much cheaper. That's the route I'm going when I upgrade everything in another 5K or so.

Could I have done it myself? sure. But I don't have the time, tools, or space

my struts were 160 for 2 and shocks were 80 for 2 took 6 hours to complete.stump jumping will greatly shorten a strut and shocks life dealers are thieves
