Rust under windshied

I am (or was) a proud owner of a 2001 SE Pathfinder model that I bought in September of 2000. 2 weeks after I bought it, the windshiled cracked, so I had to replace it on my own cost, since the NISSAN dealer was adamant about the hazard item, blah, blah, blah.. So I swalowed a 300 deductible and that was it (I thought). Last week the winshield cracked in about the same area where it cracked 6 years ago. So I thought that could be the norm, a glass every 6 years, not to bad, eh ? The Apple Glass shop guy called me shortly after I dropped the car, and he said that I need to get back to see some rust...
I was shocked to see the rust underneight the windshield where it simply there is not much sheetmetal structure to support and glue the new windshield.

This is very troublesome, as the new winshield can crack again, and again... since there is not much support left on the edges...
After less than 7 years, this car could be a total write off...I took pictures of the rust, and I am still in shock, as how this could happen?
The guy from the glass shop told me that the excess of the polyurethane may have caused the accellerated rusting, and that he has seen also something similar on Pathfinders, but
never ever like this bad...

Anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank You

Probably rusted due to tooling marks left by the previous windshield installer. When the rust expands, it causes a "pressure point" on the windshield and caused it to crack. At least that is what probably happen the second time.

Thank You to everyone that replied. It is definitely the stress accumulated in the windshield due to rusty base... I am almost a week in after installing a new windshield, and (fingers crossed) it still holds... There is only 5 years warranty on rust...
I will call Nissan Customer Service.
