Post 1996 Crankshaft Pulley Bolt

I'm having trouble removing the crankshaft pulley bolt. I've tried using a strap wrench with breaking bar, and using a impact both without luck. Does anyone know of a trick to get a very stubborn bolt off?

i havent worked on 96 engine. If you take the oil pan out, stick something in between the block and crank to prevent crank from turning. then use a long pipe and wrenge.

Other option - use a breaker bar, and try starting engine. Make sure the breaker bar wont turn and when engine is turned. <-- that would be bad.
Be sure to remove the EFI fuse or fuel pump fuse to prevent car from starting.

Use a v-belt pulley wrench from Harbor Freight Tools. $7.99 and all your problems are solved!

The starter method also works, just be careful with it.

Heh, funny, I just faced this one down a few weeks ago.

Here's what we did: remove the rubber "strap" portion from a strap wrench. (Ours was plastic-handled and about to break everytime we used it.) Use a pair of vice-grips to clamp said strap tightly around the crankshaft pulley. Vice-grip a second pair onto the end of the strap that is loose. Wedge said second pair of vice-grips up against the water-pump housing so that when you shove with the breaker bar, it will catch the vice-grips and wedge the pulley in place. Also, we had to add some length to our 2-foot breaker bar to get enough leverage to break it loose (used a piece of pipe over the top of the breaker bar to add about 12 more inches of leverage).

I know it sounds complex, but if you think about it, you'll get it. Worked like a charm (this was my brilliant brother's solution).

;-)
