I went to meineke over the weekend and they quoted me after labor, $521. They said most of the price was due to all the labor involoved in changing the front brakes. This estimate also included cleaning the back brake pads and adjusting them. Does this sound right???
most places have set prices for brakes, 4wds are higher than 2wds (not sure on your yr if the rotors come off the hubs) but 521 is pricy. call other shops and get prices over the phone. that will tell you who is misquoting or not. be sure to let them know if its 4wd or not.

Just got off the phone with dealership and since they are familiar with these kind of brake jobs, they have a special labor rate for brakes. $240 for the front brakes and to adjust the back brakes.
I did them myself. Rotors were around $70 each. The set of pads were $65.
Took about 2 hours to do the job. I like to take my time and clean everything really well and then repacked the wheel bearings with fresh grease.
The trick to it is properly torquing the wheel bearings. There is a special tool to torque them properly. I didn't have it, but guestimated the proper torque. So far so good after a year.
One must remember.........undercar shops like Midas, Meineke, Sears, Monro, etc., all like to go for the throat. Their techs are on commission so they will check every nook and cranny on your vehicle. They also have a pricing matrix where in they take their cost and mark it up depending on how much the parts cost them. They also look for the lowest priced parts around, so you can bet they are not the top of the line by any stretch.
Example: Muffler shop A calls around for the best price (their cost) on rotors and pads. Fred's parts has them for $20 ea. on rotors and pads for $15 (These are in no way the better parts for your vehicle). They take their costs and using their pricing matrix, they charge you $60 ea. for rotors and $45 for pads. They just tripled their money and gave you cheap-assed parts. Then they add in labor (maybe a coupon for $79.95 for front brakes), and voila! They charge you $245, their investment is $55 in parts, and they pay the tech one hours wage to install them (maybe $20). Add in the fact that they push their techs to go as fast as possible and you got yourself a money-maker! That's just for one axle!
No matter who does your brakes, most shops will charge you list, plus the "book" labor times and that's it. Pricing differences will come into effect based on who is trying to make the most money off of their parts or the cost of the parts themselves. Some better shops refuse to use cheaper parts. Your best bet? Find a tech that will work on the side after work and buy the parts yourself. You will save a ton of money. Even better yet, learn how to do them yourself if you are mechanically inclined.
