Smile Programming the ECU

Hi everyone.
First off, I am a with Pathfinders.

I do not own a Pathfinder but I am trying to help my sister who is presently in Costa Rica. She is the owner of a Pathfinder Chilkoot 4x4, engine 3,500cc, 6 cyl. She had some check engine lights and some sensors were replaced. She still has some check engine lights (I don't know the codes unfortunately). As all defective sensors were replaced, the mechanics over there came to the conclusion that the computer needs to be reprogrammed. She is coming back home soon ( three weeks) and instead of driving 4 hrs to get the ecu reprogrammed over there, she would prefer to remove the ECU, get it back here (Canada) to be reprogrammed at the stealership.

1. Can the stealership reprogram the ECU in a "stand alone mode" (i assume they need the VIN)?

2. Where is located the ECU and how much trouble is it to get it out?

Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that depending on the country of origin, it has different ECU & program. Let alone the country of destination.

Thanks. Meanwhile, my little sister was able to get the code: P1456. So there is a problem with evaporation control. The ECU probably doesn't need any reprogramming. I read on these forums that it could be something as stupid as a gas cap which doesn't close properly or a line which leaks the gas vapours somewhere. If there are other causes that should be looked at eveyone is welcome to make suggestions. At least I have something to give to the mom and pop shop where my sister is trying to get her Pathfinder fixed!

Thanks for your assistance.

I've seen codes such as these present from such things as you described..Examples being a faulty seal around the gas cap, a vent line having a crack in it on your vapor canister, not tightening the gas cap until it clicks three times, just a number of little things that rarely effect the performance of your vehicle..
Peace.

The first and simple place to start is the gas cap ... but here is a list of other areas.
