Shifting out of park

Hi,

I am new to this forum. I have a 2001 pathfinder LE 3.5 and have a problem shifting out of park. It stick sometime and takes a number of attempts to get it in gear. Can some one help me with this?

Thanks

my guess would be that it has something to do with the mechanism that locks the shifter into park until the key is turned, although maybe you've already thought of that. what exactly is wrong, i don't know, but that's what i'd start looking into.

GO INDY!

There is usually a shift lock release "hole" near the shifter, where you can bypass it (to see if that is the problem).

Are you parked on an incline ... are you having problems with your cruise control as well ??

Check to see if your brake lights come on when this happens.

Welcome to the board!

Just further to the "shift lock" issue. You should hear a "click" when step on the brake pedal to shift out of park. This "click" is the shift lock disengaging to phisically release the shifter - it is activated by pressing the brake pedal (that's why "Golfer" asked if your brake lights come on - I think).

Anyway, lots of questions and suggestions here. Please respond with as much detail as possible and let us know if/how you resolve it.

I'm having the same problem. I do hear the click every time I push the brake pedal, but it doesn't release the shift-lock right away. You have to wait, tap the brake, press it again, and usually within a minute or two there's another soft click and it actually releases. The intermittent nature of it makes me think it's electrical. Could a bad fuse cause something like that? Or is a fuse either good or bad...works or doesn't? Any help would be appreciated.

A fuse works or it doesn't. I would suspect the electrical solenoid that retracts the shift lock.

Hi, Did you ever fix your problem with shift-lock..?. If so, what did you end-up doing....?. I now have the same exact problem. Got it apart today, everything looks OK except the solenoid will not disengage
the shifter. Not even a click sound when I press the brake pedal. So I think, I may have a bad solenoid.
