I am new to auto gearboxes (have just aquired a 06 Pathfinder diesel) and don't quite trust the gearbox to decide my gear selection in sticky situations (such as dune crawling - perhaps the same as hill ascend in snow) Is there a way to "lock" the gearbox in the gear I prefer for the task.

You can put the shifter in the gear you want, such as leaving it in second. It will start off just fine.
