Pathfinder Starter problems

I've been playing around with my daughter's boyfriends 93 Pathfinder 4x (250K km)the last few days. Intermittent starter problem, I suspected the solenoid, since all we had to do was wiggle the wiring harness a bit for the starter to engage. Not enough room to check it out on the vehicle. It took awhile to get the starter out, had to remove the fnt splash/rock guard, oil filter and trans cooler brackets to finally get it out. Not too many dealers around here carry any kind of parts inventory for starters, so I'm assuming Nissan parts rarely fail. We are planning on cleaning it up and having it tested tomorrow. One question for Nissan fans .... the electrical connectors between the heat shield & motor... absolutely nothing will budge them. Why would they use a plug connector between two different gauges of wire? And, why would they position all of this directly under the oil filter?

I replaced the brushes in mine when it quit and it's been starting me up strong ever since. Cost me about $7 for the rebuild and took about 30 minutes. Local parts store had to order them and I picked them up the next day. I dunno why they put it under the oil filter, it sure does get a nice dousing of oil when you change oil, doesn't it? No idea on the connector, mine unplugged easily.
