Im a newbie here. Ive searched the site for answers to my questions, but none really hit the nail on the head. The reverse went out on my automatic tyranny. The guy at the shop tested it and said it was either the reverse clutch pack or the sprag (reverse sprag?). In short, a rebuild is in order. I began to pull the tyranny, the exhaust drive shafts, starter. I want to remove the torque converter bolts but I could not get access. I post said to remove a "plate" to gain greater access to the bolts through the starter hole. Question, What plate? there is a 1/16" plate sandwiched between the bell housing and the block. Is this the plate, and if so how do I remove it? The next question is, do I have to remove the torsion bars, and if so, all the way? It appears that it will come out without removing them. Any and all help would be much appreciated
That's the plate, it should rotate around a little and come out the bottom, the bolts are removed through the starter hole, and good luck getting the trans out with the t-bars in the way. Same reply you got at NPORA.

Thanks for the response. I found the other site and signed up a few days ago and could not get back to it after I posted the question, It kept saying the 'site could not be found', Thats when I began a search through Yahoo and came across this one.
now back to the tranny, do you have to remove all the bell housing bolts to be able to remove the plate and do you have to shimmy the tranny to free it up? This is the hardest vehicle I've ever worked on. I think rust was part of the undercarriage construction process. I've heard of guys putting on PB Blaster. Is it ba penetrating oil. The nuts on the cross member and the stuff on the torsion bars looks intimidating.
Yep, you have to pull the bellhousing bolts. PB Blaster is good stuff, works a lot better than WD-40.
NPORA didn't get paid for this month so it's down for the time being. It'll be back.
