Hi all, Can anybody help me with this problem. I have just purchased a one year old Pathfinder and there is a grating noise when the drive to the front wheels is taken up on a slippery surface. Is this normal? the noise occurs in low range, auto and high.
So when you drive up a slippery slope, while in 4WD, there is a grating noise coming from the front of the vehicle? Sorry, not exactly sure what you are trying to say.
Is this while you are going slowly? While turning? or going straight?
Also, is this when you go from a flat surface then go on up a slope? Or while you are stopped on a slope then accelerate?
Thanks for your reply. The noise occurs only when first moving off having engaged 4wd from standstill. It may simply be clutch plates taking up the drive but i have no technical information on this system or how drive is engaged. I think the noise is coming from the front diff. Can you help?
I'd get it looked at before it becomes a crunching noise and you need a new front diff.

I get that all the time when I step on the brakes hard on an icy surface. I get the noise in any drive whether it's 2 or 4H. I don't think you need to worry about it. Other than that, I don't recall getting a scraping noise any other time.

Thanks for your reply. I also wondered if it was something to do with the traction control or ABS system, its that sort of noise but just sounded a bit alarming. Im hoping its just down to my lack of knowledge of this new system.
The ABS does a quick check, but that is only during the first couple minutes right after starting the engine. If you have a higher model of the Pathfinder, then it might be the Hillstart feature, where the brakes remain applied for a few seconds longer after you let go to press on the accel. Try checking what model and features your Pathfinder came with.
It's your ABS system trying to slow down the spinning wheel. You can feel it though your brake pedal & hear it like an impact wrench? The reason you hear it more in 4wd is because it applies it to the front(closer to you). Also I bet your "SLIP" light come on.
Cheers xeno! Thats exactly what it is. I feel a bit stupid now but ive only had it a few days and driven it off-road once. Im more used to driving old tractors and purpose built specials off-road and none of them have ABS.
