I have a 96 XE, auto, 4x4. I started having this problem of the truck not starting one afternoon after I washed it. When I go to start the truck, everything sounds normal, except it never "fires." If I hold the key in the start position for about 5 seconds, while pumping the gas, after about 3-4 trys it will start. After if starts, there is an odor of gasoline, but other than that the truck runs fine. The next time I start the truck it fires right up, but then a week or 2 later, same problem. It has happened a total of about 5 times.
Trying to track the problem is hard, because there is never a single factor the same. It happened once after I washed it, but never has any trouble in the rain. It has happened then the vehicle was shut down for only 5 minutes, 1 hour, over night.
Any help in to point me in the right direction is appreciated.
Have your ECU error codes checked at an auto parts store or mechanic's. That may help you find a place to start looking. There are so many damn things that *could* be wrong with it that it's impossible to start by guessing at things.

My gut tells me ignition. Check coil for proper ground, check cable from coil to distributor. If the thing wont start in the first place, it wont throw a code. Once running, the problem must not be happening. I bet its an intermittant ground problem/coil. Good luck.

Ok, after playing around the forum looking for other with fuel regulator problems, it sounds like it might be an option. However, I am pretty mechanic dumb, but pretty good at taking things apart and stuff.
How do you replace the fuel regulator, or is it something that requires special tools?
The ECU will store all error messages, regardless of the CEL's operation.
