Auto trans/cooler questions

First, I've read every thread related to auto trans and the clogged cooler being the culprit. My transmission runs fine but I pulled the pan for the hell of it after reading so many failures on here. Its a 95 3.0L 2wd with 160k miles on it. The trans has been flush serviced at 40k, 75k, and 120k miles but never the pan. The pan had a fair amount of goo in the pan and magnet. I can only imagine what is in the cooler.

Heres my questions though. I googled RE4R01A and came up with this

Nissan Automatic Transmission RE4R01A, Mazda R4A-EL, Subaru ECAT

It states whats been covered here plenty of times but keeps mentioning 'fin' -type coolers as if theyre the devil. Aren't all coolers fin type or no?

Then it states fin type coolers can't be cleaned by conventional means but then links you to this page

Nissan Automatic Transmission RE4R01A, Mazda R4A-EL, Subaru ECAT

and says to use the flush included with the kit? Is it non-conventional then? I was thinking about using a pump and pumping mineral spirits in the reverse direction of flow from the stock cooler to get contaminents out and then add an auxillary cooler after it.

Thoughts?

Do not use the stock cooler at ALL. Bypass it. Get rid of it. It will kill your transmission. Just use an aftermarket external cooler. There are two types of external coolers...tube-and-fin, and plate. The plate-type coolers work best. The finned coolers they talk about on the links you provided are INTERNAL coolers inside the transmission. If you changed the fluid you probably won't need to flush everything, just don't use the stock cooler.

Thanks, I'll bypass the stock cooler then! Are the haynes and similar aux coolers you get at autoparts stores plate style?

A plate cooler is flat, sturdy and usually just painted black. Tube-and-fin coolers are usually just aluminum-colored, are thicker and have delicate fins arranged along a s-curved tube that runs from one side to the other.

Gotcha, I understand now. Tub and fin is the sucketh. I was thinking about getting this one

B&M SuperCooler Oil Coolers: BMM-70255 - summitracing.com

or this one

B&M SuperCooler Oil Coolers: BMM-70268 - summitracing.com

They are the same price but the latter has a btu rating of 13000 vs 9800...whatever the hell that means, it cools about 25% better. Do you think the 7.5 x 11 x .75 will fit? Aren't you running two? What size are they? Is the grill pretty easy to get off to do this?

Yes, but they don't have the same problem as the ones that came in the WD21's do.

The bigger, the better. Mine are 8x11 or so. I put mine inbetween the rad and the AC condenser, so I have no idea on putting one in front.
