- Use only Genuine NISSAN Matic J ATF.
Do not mix with other fluids.
- Using automatic transmission fluid
other than Genuine NISSAN Matic J ATF
will cause deterioration in driveability
and automatic transmission durability,
and may damage the automatic transmission,
which is not covered by the
NISSAN new vehicle limited warranty.
Does anyone know where i can get automatic tranny fluid for my 2005 , do i have to buy from the dealer only or can i get it at any automotive shop?
If you do get the right fluid, have you found the place to add it? No, because it is a sealed unit. I guess you can take stuff apart to add it, but that kind of person would also know what fluid to add .
Other words; take it to a shop that knows Nissans.
I was specifically warned by my dealer to not even think about checking or replacing transmission fluid during the warranty period. Since I don't tow a trailer I'm running my '05 on "Schedule 1" service, which recommends inspection at 45k miles or 36 months. I'm at 21k and 23 months.
I really don't understand the last post, this transmission is not a sealed unit. It has a drain plug and a charging pipe and allows for fluid addition or flushing. But I do agree, take it to the shop if you need something done on the transmission.
Sealed, as in no dipstick and is meant for service at the dealer only.

There is most certainly a dipstick. It's on the left side of the engine compartment (as you stand in front of the vehicle), far back, near the firewall. You have to remove a bolt that fastens the top of the dipstick to the dipstick tube.
Clearly shown in the parts diagram, on page 249 of the service manual here;

I suggest you taek to dealer and undergo 30K mile full check. If you are asking about tranny oil flush anyway, you may want to spend. It amounts to about $350 but believe me, its worth it - mine feels it rund so brand new again, real smooth. I provided the engine oil though, I use Castrol Semi Synthetic. I still want to change oil every 3,000 miles. Fresh oil is still better than using full synthetic and going 7,000-10,000 miles. Oil gets dirty so thats my take.
all i want to do is top it off with a little fluid, i have 19k on the vehicle and it looks just a touch low on the dipstick . i guess i will just go to the dealer and buy a quart ( if they will eve nsell it to me) .

According to Valvoline, their "MAXLIFE ATF" is a compatible substitute for Nissan Matic J ATF

overfilling the transmission is bad. typically the best way to check the trans fluid level is after the car has warmed up (3-6 miles driving, average outside temp) park the car on a level road, cycle through all the gears, and then check.
i don't know the specifics as to why, but every manual i've ever read says it's important not to overfill the transmission, so just be cautious.
i knew thier had to be a over the counter brand i could use, because i know nissan doesnt make thier own transmission fluid. Valvoline probably makes it and packages it for them.
This post got me thinking, so I checked my fluid cold and it was on the low end of the acceptable range. Before I add any I'll definitely check it hot to make sure. But I did go to Nissan to pick up a quart of matic J -- $9.15 plus tax per quart! No wonder they're so rigid on the fluid spec, they're ripping us off on aftermarket. I'm not looking forward to the day of having to flush & replace the fluid. I will look into the Valvoline before any major replacement.
