Timing belt and water pump as a sidejob
Trying to find a mechanic friend (I have a few) that'll do this job on the side for me as I'll be selling the car and really don't want to spend $400-$600 on the timing belt.
Just trying to figure what parts I need.
So far:
Timing belt kit (not really sure what to get here)
Select Part
Water Pump (first one)
Select Part
Water Pump Gasket
Select Part
Thoughts?

Yeah, timing belt and water pump is what you'll need. the WP comes with a gasket already. I'd put in a new thermostat also. Those too don't last forever.

New drive belts, coolant hoses (4), cam seals and crank seal.

They're all saying they don't want to do it because they've never worked on a Nissan before.
Ugh.
Might just have to drop another $500-$600 into this thing...

Would they work on it if they have a service manual? You can probably get one for a week at a library, or go out and buy one at an automotive store.

I'll try and see.
There's a site online you can download PDF's of any service manual in existence (well, almost). I could just print out the needed pages.

I know those are dirt cheap in parts, but what labor is involved?

Not much if any. When I did my 97 one of the cam seals was leaking and you couldn't see it until you removed the cam sprocket.

Also you can get the FSM for free pretty easily, if you look there are links to it here and at the npora forums.

One of my mechanic friends said you need a special tool to do the OHV timing belt jobs. Something he doesn't have.

Get the FSM steps. You'll see the only special tool they call for is a feeler gauge if you can call that special. An impact wrench makes easy work of the crank bolt, but is not required.

This engine is an interference design, correct?

Yes. Quote from FSM: "do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately because valves will stike piston heads."

Pussies! I did mine first time no prob with only a Chilton's. Search NPORA for more info, there's a lot on there. No special tools needed whatsoever. Also, $600 for a t-belt/WP is CHEAP. Most people pay at least $800-1100.
