like the title says, got up one morning and the truck was gone.
Any advice other than prayers??
From the experience with the cop who came to get a report, I have no doubts this guy would not find it if it was parked in his own garage!
Shell I check any place in particular??
Carfax?? If that matters, the truck was in the SF bay area...
Sorry to hear that. I guess the only thing you can do is sit tight and have the proper authorities do their thing. Have you called your insurance yet. I hope you have the comprehensive coverage in case the worst thing happens. These people needs some beating.
Did you check with the local towing yard that does towing for the parking lot? How about police impound yard? How about your finical company (or was it paid off?). I would think no one would steal a 14+ year old truck?

The truck was on a street in Berkeley, where I've been parking it for years. I parked it there the evening before, so it did not sit there for too long. In the same neighborhood, I did have two breakins in the last 2 years. All they took was a pair of broken sunglasses.
There was no construction, or other activity that would call for towing it. The local residents told me there was no activity of notice.
The tags were clean, so no reason to impound. But, good idea (thanks!), I'll check with local tow away companies.
In case anyone in the area notices, here are a few "unique" features.
- the railing alongside the driver's side is missing the footstep (antislip) part by the driver's door
- the rear bumper is bent on the passenger side. There is a red SF resident parking sticker (1999?).
- the driver seat leather is broken up in many pieces and the foam shows up on the seat.
- (harder to notice) the weatherstripping on top of the windshield is peeling off because the brackets that hold it down at its ends are missing or broken.
- the hood has two scratches almost symmetric in its front (caused by a loose cart at a shopping center!).
Don't just call down to the impound (with your tag) go down there. Criminals been known to swap tags out. Also check around all the streets near by (because it might have died on them and they just left in on the side of the road or parking lot) Check your local school parking lots and down some allies near by.
A parking ticket showed up in the mail, so I went straight to the location and there it was, well within city boundaries. The police system is so messed up that the parking ticket (with the correct VIN info and license plate) did not raise a flag. This happened 10 weeks after it was stolen!! the truck was 0.9 miles from where it was taken. Does not start due to a dead battery, which I could not make go even with jumper cables.
Anyway, not much was taken (they drove it <100 miles), it is in pretty much the same shape, except that they broke into the steering column: the ignition switch is off, so one can turn it to start the truck and the main lock assembly does not turn. The steering is blocked, so I had the pathy towed home.
At this point I assume I'll need a new housing with lock cylinder, so I don't need to worry about why I cannot unblock the steering column. Hopefully taking this off is not such a pain. When I did it on a certain German car, I had to chisel off the screws holding the assembly!!!
goog news my friend!!! if u want to unluck ur steering column just try to start ur engine while u r moving the steering column left and right do it with a little bit of force, that will do it!!
Did more reading re changing the steering column lock:
- does anyone know if I can chisel the two bolts that hold the lock on the column off of do I need to drill them out??
- can I replace the lock without removing the steering wheel?? It looks like once the bolts come off, I can just replace the lock...but the book I have talks about removing the wheel first...
Maybe you can get a local body shop to do the work and get the insurance to pay for it. That is unless you only have liability. Good luck on fixing it.

I tried, not too long, with a chisel, but seems like the bolts are too recessed to get a good angle on them. I'll try to drill the bolts out....hopefully the metal is not too hard...
Out of curiousity...what happened with the insurance company? I assume you filed a claim, but did they pay out anything? And so now what do you do?
Also did you report it to the police that you found it? How did that conversation go?
The pathy was not insured for theft....
I called the police right away, since I did not want to touch the truck until they checked it out.
They sent someone out and called me when the officer was at the location. He cleared the truck's record and let me have it.
