Since braking is a critical safety feature on any vehicle, I would never advise someone to compromise this system. The best braking is achieved with properly machined discs and good pads. Having said that, I can now go on to say what my experience is...
I have replaced brake pads many times on all
MY vehicles, and have only rarely replaced or re-machined the discs. Currently, our '92 is running on new pads with discs that a brake shop would probably recommend replacing or machining. But I have made the decision (for myself) to keep running the older discs.
Now, before I get a bunch of angry responses, I do realize that I am not the only guy on the road, and brake failure on my vehicle could involve someone else as well. So, of course, the moment I notice even the slightest failure in the braking, I will make sure I replace the discs - - assuming it's not too late
So, bottom line - - when you do these repairs yourself, you make the call yourself. If a brake shop does the work, they should always err on the side of caution - - I should probably too...
Have fun!!!
