Was this "Limp Home" Mode

So, the other day coming home, we got on the highway and suddenly I could not get our '92 to do more than about 80 km/hr on the highway. If I tried to accelerate, the tranny would down-shift, engine would rev, but speed would not dramatically increase. Seemed to be restricted somehow.

So, I pulled over and shut the engine off. Once I restarted all was well again - as if the computer needed to be reset.

I've read about the "limp home" mode, but have never experienced it. Was this what happened, and what might have caused it? It's been fine since...

Ummm, I don't think '92 had that. It probably is a problem though. Computer usually can not be reset that easily. Lat tune up? Whats your mileage?

It'll do that under certain conditions such as overheating or revolution sensor malfunction. The transmission control unit will lock it in 2nd gear. It does reset after you turn the key off and on again, just like you experienced.
