00 Pathfinder Timing Belt

I just bought a 00 Pathfinder with 112K miles and I don't know if the timing belt has been changed.

Is there any way to find out if it has been done by a dealer (by VIN, Etc)?

New timing belts from Nissan come with a sticker to put under the hood with the mileage and date of replacement, not sure if they actually use it since I did mine myself. You might take a look and see if one is there.

No such luck. I guess I will end up having to change it to be sure. Just hate to go to the trouble if it has already been changed.

Also, I know they are supposed to be changed at 105K, but at what mileage do they generally fail?

All depends, I guess. I recall someone hear didn't change it and drove bout 30000km over the recommended change period and didn't have problems. Good thing or he'd have bent valves and a hole or more in the piston cylinder heads.

How involved is changing the timing belt? I just bougt a 93 with 200K on it. I'm thinking it's probably due for a change, anyways.

Does the idea of pulling everything off the front of the motor, and half of the air intake, vacume lines, and PCV lines, Harmonic balancer ect. scare you? ...if not then your good to go! Make sure you have the nessesary tools as well as a few other parts to replace while in there, waterpump, thermostat, upper/lower/mid hoses tend to get pretty crappy around this mileage and need replacing. Also hose clamps to replace the stock nissan ones you will end up butchering with a pair of pliers to get off due to rust.

Oh Goody !! Sounds like fun, but I may end up doing just that. Local dealer quoted $500 to do it.

I don't think I'll have any problems, but I'll look you up if I do.

I've changed timing belts in the past, but never looked forward to it.lol

Thanks for the offer.

winnercircle, are you in Charlotte? Looking at your location, it says 'Panthers Den'. If your local to me, I'd like to come by and help or watch the timing belt swap. Since I'll be needing to do it on my Pathy, as well
