Speedo / tach/ fuel / temp guages

Hi all,

On my '00 4X4 AT Pathfinder, the guages are intermittently working. Some days they work fine then I'll lose them and several minutes or hours later they can come back on. The tach, speedometer, odometer, fuel guage and temp guage are all affected. The Check Engine light is also on. Could this be that speed sensor?

My dad has checked fuses and grounds and connections including removing the cluster and hasn't found anything abnormal.

The speed sensor you refer to would only effect the speedometer only not showing any speed.

What you're describing sounds more like a power or ground problem.

Does the dash lights for the gauges illuminate??

Heather, I'll send you some troubleshooting information for your dad to use if you like.

If it isn't a simple case of power or ground issue the worst case scenario is the gauge cluster (control unit built in to guage cluster ) has to be replaced.

I also have a 2000 Pathfinder and the tach, speedometer, odometer; fuel gauge and temp gauge work when the engine is cold and after in use for 20 -30 minutes it all goes out. The Check Engine light is also on. (speed sensor code) I replaced the Speedometer sending unit in the A/T and the printed circuit board behind the instrument cluster. (these replacements wire suggested by the service manual) Still have the same problem. Found the area where several electrical components plug in under the right side passenger floor to be a possible area for the electrical malfunction. Cleaned all of the connection then I insulated it (with household attic insulation) away from the exhaust pipe. After that the time it worked was much longer and once it was out while hot it was out much longer. It took all the way to the next day before it went out again. On short trips it never goes out. Always works when cold. Long trips it always fails.

Any suggestions?
