I'm most likly beating a dead horse here but I have a Problem.
I have a 89 LE 2wd Automatic Transmission.
When I shift from Park to drive, it starts out in 1st but will not shift out to 2nd. I can move the shifter to 2nd and it will shift to 2nd gear. But it will not for any reason shift into 3rd gear no matter what I try to do. IF I shift from 2nd to drive the gears never catch. It works fine in Park and Rev. though. I have tryed to Google the problem and found some info. but nothing like this type of problem. I have searched this forum upto page 30 and seen like problems also. If anyone has a clue to this problem please let me know.

Run a transmission control unit test to see if any error codes are stored. You may find out what's causing the problem. Other than that, all I can do is toss out ideas that may or may not be right. It could be fluid problems, brake/band problems, solenoids, wiring, bad ground to the engine/trans, a hundred things.
