New Lifters

Hello forum, I'm thinking about fixing my lifter tick issue..It's really annoying me and I'm going to try to get it done when i have my timing belt replaced..I was just wondering if i have to remove the heads, or can these lifters be replaced by just removing the valve cover and cam and rocker arms and such?...Any info is highly Apreciated. Peace

I would have to say that you need to remove the heads. Never heard of a modern car that you don't.

OK stupid thought, guessing you have a V6, isnt that an OHC (over the head cam)?

Okay.Yes, it is SOHC...I recently worked on a Hyundai Accent with DOHC, once the cams were removed it revealed the hydrualic lifter..they just sit right on top of the valves..I take it my Pathfinders are burried deeper in the engine?

I was just wondering thinking that it would be set up with the cam to rocker to valve stem, with no lifter in it. didnt realize there were hyd. lifters underneath.

I'm still alittle confused on the location of these hydrualic lifters in my Pathy..???...From what i've seen, they don't sit on top of the valves like some new vehicles...Maybe someone will see the post and send some pics or first hand on the replacement of these..Thanks for the reply..Peace.

It is a SOHC and the lifters are removeable from under the valve cover. Just pop that valve cover off and start working on it.

On that note, make sure it's the lifters and not an exhaust manifold leak. 99% of the time it's the exhaust. You don't want to buy $200 worth of parts, tear it all apart and have it not be fixed, do you?

No..I wouldn't want that..Thank you for being so concerned, but I'm almost 100% sure it's the lifters...It doesn't do it all the time...Here recently, it hasn't been as bad, but it's an actual metal on metal contact sound right under the valve covers..It's in random patterns too...Okay, just to clafiy....It doesn't do it when i drive for about a half hour, but as soon as i stop..about 1 minute at idle speed and it will usually start ticking...Also, do lifters from earlier years of Pathfinders fit my 95'.?..I found some for a VG30, from a maxima and 88-93 Pathy on ebay. But the seller listed they fit all models exept 94 and 95..As far as i thought, these engines are identical right?..So they will fit mine..All Pathfinders from 80's to 95 V6 were the VG30E?.Correct me if I'm wrong though..Just a mistake on ebay right?..The seller apparently doesn't know..Peace...!!! Thnx a mill...

P.S..Sorry for such a long post, but you really seen to know your way around the Nissan world..You wouldn't happen to know the procedure for removing and installing new lifters would you?...Is this just pulling the valve covers, removing the main caps, camshaft and will the lifter just pull out and i just drop the new ones in?..

Thanks so much man!

Go here to download a free factory service manual:

And yes, I do believe lifters from any NA VG30E should be the same. They didn't change cams much between models/engines at all.
